چکیده

Spatial information is an important cue for visual object analysis. Various studies in this field have been conducted. However, they are either too rigid or too fragile to efficiently utilize such information. In this paper, we propose to model the distribution of objects' local appearance patterns by using their cooccurrence at different spatial locations. In order to represent such a distribution, we propose a flexible framework called spatial feature co-pooling, with which the relations between patterns are discovered. As the final representation resulted from our framework is of high dimensionality, we propose a semigreedy (SG) grafting algorithm to select the most discriminative features. Experimental results on the CIFAR 10, UIUC Sports and VOC 2007 datasets show that our method is effective and comparable with the state-of-art algorithms. & 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Grafting and Poisson structure in (2+1)-gravity with vanishing cosmological constant

We relate the geometrical construction of (2+1)-spacetimes via grafting to phase space and Poisson structure in the Chern-Simons formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity with vanishing cosmological constant on manifolds of topology R × Sg, where Sg is an orientable two-surface of genus g > 1. We show how grafting along simple closed geodesics λ is implemented in the Chern-Simons formalism and d...

Compact Tensor Pooling for Visual Question Answering

Performing high level cognitive tasks requires the integration of feature maps with drastically different structure. In Visual Question Answering (VQA) image descriptors have spatial structures, while lexical inputs inherently follow a temporal sequence. The recently proposed Multimodal Compact Bilinear pooling (MCB) forms the outer products, via count-sketch approximation, of the visual and te...

Image Classification by Hierarchical Spatial Pooling with Partial Least Squares Analysis

Recent coding-based image classification systems generally adopt a key step of spatial pooling operation, which characterizes the statistics of patch-level local feature codes over the regions of interest (ROI), to form the image-level representation for classification. In this paper, we present a hierarchical ROI dictionary for spatial pooling, to beyond the widely used spatial pyramid in imag...

Where to Focus: Deep Attention-based Spatially Recurrent Bilinear Networks for Fine-Grained Visual Recognition

Fine-grained visual recognition typically depends on modeling subtle difference from object parts. However, these parts often exhibit dramatic visual variations such as occlusions, viewpoints, and spatial transformations, making it hard to detect. In this paper, we present a novel attention-based model to automatically, selectively and accurately focus on critical object regions with higher imp...

Second-Order Statistical Texture Representation of Asphalt Pavement Distress Images Based on Local Binary Pattern in Spatial and Wavelet Domain

Assessment of pavement distresses is one of the important parts of pavement management systems to adopt the most effective road maintenance strategy. In the last decade, extensive studies have been done to develop automated systems for pavement distress processing based on machine vision techniques. One of the most important structural components of computer vision is the feature extraction met...
